2014 Show For Dough is a Success
The 2014 Show For Dough, held May 7 – 11 in Tunica Mississippi, was a big success. Overall, a little over $84,000 was paid out over four days at the show.
In its second year, this year’s show, with 100% NSBA payback, was larger than the inaugural event held last year, with almost twice the number of stalls sold, more entries, and more money paid out.
Highlights included the 3 Year Old $2500 Limited Horse Western Pleasure, with Rock County Kid, ridden by Rusty Green and owned by Sharnai T. Thompson of Pilot Point TX taking home the top prize, as well as 3 Year Old $1,000 Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle, with winner A Cool Invitation, ridden by Sonnesa Gooding and owned by Michelle and Sheila Bauer of Holland MI, among the many money winners.
According to show organizer and manager Dave Dellin, when asked about the goals of the Show For Dough and the outlook for future shows –
“We are really looking forward to next years show. There are several ideas we are working on to make it even larger than this years show. Our goal is to really promote the concept of showing for money to the all around trainers and exhibitors. We will be changing our classes in the horsemanship, showmanship, and equitation to reflect that goal.”
As he reflected on the mission of the event, Dave added –
“We really want people to think long term. What would the show horse industry look like sometime in the future if we judged a horse’s merits not only on their points earned but also on the amount of money they earned? A trail horse with $2,400 worth of earnings in a single trail class?? Ask Blake Weis how that feels. That’s what he won in our Green/Junior trail Challenge this year!
Just think what the big picture would look like if owners could offset costs of showing with earnings. How much better does it sound to tell a coworker on Monday your horse had a great show and you won $1,400 this weekend, rather than saying your horse had a great show and you won 14 points this weekend? How many new people would be interested in showing horses if they could relate to what you won? I think points will always have a place in horse showing, we just believe financial paybacks also have a place in horse showing…just like they do in racing, cutting, reining, roping, etc.”
