__________________________

Started back in 1967, the first annual All American Quarter Horse Congress ran for just three days: November 3, 4 and 5.  It was held at its present location, the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus.  Registration was $20 for all three days, $15 for Saturday and Sunday, and just $5 for Sunday only.  That first year, more than 5,000 horsemen and women came to the Congress, and the event netted $15,000 over its three-day run.

Fast forward 47 years, to the present.  The 2014 All American Quarter Horse Congress will run its typical 3+ week schedule, and maintain its title as “The largest single-breed horse show in the world.”  With over 21,000 entries, attracting more than 650,000 people to the Columbus area, the show generates $200 million for the central Ohio economy.  Attendees come from every US state, and several foreign countries.  Nearly $3 million is given away in cash and prizes, including trucks and trailers, trophy saddles, and sterling silver buckles.

We’ve come a long way, baby!

Along with classes and events that have been showcased at the Congress for many years, this year new classes have also been added.  RFD’s The American Rodeo qualifier event for roping, all classes in the Small Fry division and all divisions of the Ranch Horse Pleasure.

Some highlights this year-

Small Fry Horsemanship showcases the youngest riders at the Congress.  Aged nine and under, these exuberant riders, decked out in their spectacular show clothes, ride their mounts with such pride.  These classes will take place October 12.

The always amazing Masters Events include the Equine Chronicle Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle classes.  Showcasing the natural talent of the maiden two-year-old, all entries must purchase a slot, which were sold at the first Masters Events back in 2004, and are owned for life.  These classes will be held the last Saturday of Congress, October 25.

Freestyle Reining is often compared to figure skating in that riders create their own pattern to music. It combines the athletics and finesse of Reining moves with the melodies of popular music in this very well attended event.  Costumes are often worn by both riders and horses.  Freestyle Reining happens on October 11.

Ranch Horse Pleasure is new to the Congress this year.  Its purpose is to showcase the versatility, attitude and movement of a working horse.  The horse’s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena.  Look for these classes on October 10.

The NYATT (National Youth Activity Team Tournament) brings together more than 100 teams and 600 youth from state and regional Quarter Horse Associations to compete in six events.  Awards are given at the end of the tournament, during the NYATT Awards celebration on Sunday, October 19.

The Congress Super Sale has been held every year since the Congress began in 1967,  The Super Sale is an opportunity to purchase some of the finest horses in the world.  The 2014 Super Sale is presented by Kaplow Insurance and managed by Professional Horse Services. The sale catalog can be viewed and/or downloaded by visiting their website – www.ProHorseServices.com.  This year’s sale will be held Saturday, October 18.

The All American Quarter Horse Queen Contest has young women from all over the US competing for the title of Congress Queen. Contestants must compete with a written exam focusing on the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations, an oral interview and a Horsemanship pattern.  Candidates are also featured during the Queen’s Style Show, Saturday, October 18, which highlights the latest fashions in western and English wear on the runway.  The new Queen will be crowned on Sunday, October 19, and will thereafter serve as an ambassador to the show, making appearances throughout the year at national events.
