The Kentucky Quarter Horse Association (KyQHA) announced today that it would no longer require that Kentucky BIF stallions must also be nominated to the American Quarter Horse Association Incentive Fund. Elimination of the longstanding requirement will become effective with the 2015 breeding season.

“Henceforth, Kentucky stallions participating in our program will have only one nomination required to make their progeny eligible for the KyQHA BIF,” said Dr. Bob Coleman, 2014 KyQHA president. “Our board has also approved a BIF Committee recommendation that the program’s fee structure, which has been in place since 2009, remain unchanged. We believe that by maintaining our fees at the 2009 level while at the same time eliminating the need to pay an AQHA Incentive Fund stallion nomination fee, will provide much more value for stallion owners who wish to make their horse’s progeny eligible for the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund.”

The KyQHA BIF has fostered the most dramatic economic growth among all the breed programs written into Kentucky law in 2005. This has been due to its strategic approach. The largest proportion of funds awarded through Kentucky’s Quarter Horse program has always been paid directly to the buyers – i.e., the exhibitors or racers – of eligible Kentucky-bred foals, regardless of where they may have competed. This approach has enhanced the market value of KY-bred Quarter Horses. Breeders breed to nominated stallions in Kentucky, and buyers pay more for their progeny in hopes of earning awards from the BIF.

Since 2006, the increase in the number of KY-bred Quarter Horses showing at AQHA approved shows throughout the world has been 83%, approaching twice the total in 2006.

The Kentucky Quarter Horse Association, the state’s only sanctioned affiliate of the American Quarter Horse Association, is committing to improving both the overall quality of Quarter Horses produced, and also the economic and business climate for those who breed, own, show and train them

“The KyQHA is consistently maneuvering to position the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund so as to optimize and increase its value to those of us who own and/or manage stallions,” said Sandy Walker, owner of MWS Flashy Zipper an Indiana stallion nominated into the program since its inception. “This has been, and still is, a challenging time in the breeding business, and promotional dollars have to be spent carefully. As someone who is standing a stallion in Kentucky, I appreciate the dedication of KyQHA to seek ways to continually improve Kentucky’s Quarter Horse Breeders’ Incentive Fund.”
