Jumping Legend, Ferns Ruby, Dies

Our condolences to all involved with this great mare.

Three-time world champion Ferns Ruby died March 29, 2015.

The 1985 chestnut mare was by the Thoroughbred stallion Fern Dancer and out of Dynamite Cody by Billy Pardo. She was bred by Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Allday of Aiken, South Carolina, and was owned for most of her life by Raymond Coutley of Lexington Park, Maryland, who reported the loss on his Facebook page.

“ ‘Ruby’ was a once-in-a-lifetime horse that I wish to thank fate for orchestrating as a part of my life,” Raymond wrote. “Beyond all the championships and her offspring’s championships, I will cherish most the bond and trust we had in one another. Ruby, thanks for taking care of me and you will be truly missed.”

Ruby was reserve world champion in open jumping in 1996 and 1998, amateur world champion in 1997 and 2000, and open world champion in 1999. She was third at the Adequan Select World Championship Show in 2011.

Her 2000 colt, Navier Stokes, is a five-time world champion, including the amateur world championship in 2014. Her 1999 daughter, Rubys Work Of Art, was the 2012 reserve world champion in amateur jumping.

Raymond and Ruby were featured in the November 2014 issue of America’s Horse and in a Breeder Spotlight video with The American Quarter Horse Journal .
