They say every dark cloud has a silver lining, and that seemed to prove true for trainer Richard Spinks and his client Michele Martindale at the 2014 APHA Farnam Breeders’ Trust Select Sale, which took place Nov. 9 at the APHA World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. After delivering the heartbreaking news that Michele’s reining horse had suffered a debilitating hock injury and had to be euthanized, Richard felt compelled to walk through the consignment stalls—fate intervened, and Richard was drawn to A Scenic Ride, hip 39 in the Yearling Select Sale.

“I walked back to the stall to look at another horse. When I got back there, they showed me this one. Ten minutes before we walked in, I called Michele and told her about this horse,” the Cypress, Texas, horseman said.

Watching A Scenic Ride in the sale preview session, Richard knew the colt was a good one. Sired by A Scenic Impulse, the yearling sorrel overo colt is out of the Zippos Sensation daughter, A Sensational Zippo—both sire and dam have earned championships in big money Western pleasure futurities at the Reichert Celebration. Stanley and Susan Scott of Ocala, Florida, bred A Scenic Ride; he was consigned to the Farnam Breeders’ Trust Select Sale by the Scotts through agent Kathy Kennedy.
